He was ordained to the priesthood on April 13, , in the Minorite Church in Cologne. His first posting was as chaplain in Elberfeld. Here he became acquainted with an association for Catholic journeymen, which had been founded in with the active assistance of the teacher Gregor Johann Breuer, and in , he was elected as its praeses.
In this association later renamed the Catholic Journeymen's Association , young men - mostly journeymen of the trades - came together for social activities, as well as educational programs. While he had for a long time played with the idea of some day pursuing an academic career, he now recognized that working with and for these young men was his real vocation.
Since he had been a journeyman himself for many years and was therefore well acquainted with the problems of these young men, he dedicated the rest of his life first and foremost to addressing these issues. In , he came to Cologne; as curate at the Cathedral, he had the time to dedicate himself to the expansion of the Catholic Journeymen's Association through exemplary action, through his travels, and through his writings.
In addition, he was widely recognized as a public communicator and popular writer in broad segments of the Catholic population. In his few remaining years, the Association expanded steadily; by , there were already over Journeymen's Associations in numerous countries of Europe and even overseas.

Unfortunately you will not understand most of the intelligent jokes if you are not Austrian, and that not only because of the language the film had to be subtitled in most of Germany.
